How can we protect the environment from harm through law enforcement? Environmental crime not only provides significant profits that can total millions of dollars for criminals but also results in considerable damage to the environment and to humans. Environmental crimes and other illegal activities such as the illegal disposal of waste into waterways, the air and the ground among other environmental degradation can cause enormous damage to biodiversity, destroy jobs in communities, and result in wide spread human health issues.
The environmental crimes committed by one company or even one individual can have far-reaching consequences beyond the damage caused in the criminals immediate area. Moreover many businesses which violates environmental laws do so to gain unfair economic advantage over businesses that conduct their operations legally. How then are we to police our environment to prevent harm to our environment and ensure governments introduce the legislation and enforcement regimes to ensure enforcement agencies have the power to stop environmental crimes.
It is the responsibility of Environmental Law Enforcement to ensure that environmental crimes are detected, investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and more importantly receive penalties sufficient enough to deter future violations. The pursuit of environmental criminals has international, national, state and local repercussions. In some cases countries downstream from environmental crimes can suffer the consequences by having their drinking water supplies contaminated, their fish stock decimated, or their health seriously effected.
Hazardous waste, especially from more developed nations who have the capacity to strictly control their waste disposal methods, can be illegally disposed of in less developed countries, taking advantage of lax or non-existent environmental controls or effective enforcement, and corrupted officials. In today’s global economy there is a need for an international strategy to deal with this type of criminality. There are many agencies that deal with environmental crimes, and in a time when action is desperately needed to at leased make an effort to save or planet, these agencies will need all the assistance we as a global community can provide to reduce the effects of our systems of consumption and systems of disposal has on the planet.
