Local
There are varied enforcement agencies dealing with the implementation and enforcement of environmental laws at a local level. Enforcement agencies include county sheriff’s departments in the USA or municipal police services such as the Toronto Police Service in Canada. These police organisations have very restricted territorial boundaries and enforce national, state and local laws within this area. These police services are different from state police services in that the officers, particularly the sheriffs in the USA, can be elected officials.

The Sheriff's Environmental Crimes Unit is a Unit of Special Operations Division and Utilizes Officers from Sheriff's Hazardous Material Team, another Special Ops Unit. While other agencies and counties disband or shrink their environmental crimes enforcement efforts, Sheriff Speziale realizes the fundamental importance of a clean environmental and the apprehension of environmental criminal, not only for ourselves but also for our children.
In the US County of Passaic illegal dumping of hazardous waste and toxic chemicals became a major concern which culminated in the development the Environmental Crimes Unit in 2002. The ECU has worked many cases of note and alongside agencies such as the FBI, EPA-CID, DEP and the state department of criminal justice environmental crimes unit.
